What is RoHS and WEEE?

In February 2003, the European Union issued Directive 2002/95/EC regarding the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) and Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

The RoHS directive states that as of July 1, 2006, electrical and electronic equipment producers must restrict the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in products sold in the European Union (EU). This restriction holds producers to maximum concentration values below those defined in the amendment to the RoHS Directive, Commission Decision 2005/618/EC dated August 18, 2005. L-com has created a specification to define prohibited materials targeted for elimination and or reduction to compliant levels. This document can be retrieved here: LSP-011.pdf.

RoHS Status on the L-com Website

L-com is committed to getting fully RoHS compliant products to market as quickly as the supply chain will permit. On July 9, 2006 L-com added functionality on its website so users can access RoHS status of products available for sale. Customers requesting a conformance declaration from L-com can do so on the product detail pages within the website.

L-com has multiple flags for RoHS status on the L-com website. Below are descriptions of how we classify our products:

·          RoHS Compliant: Products have been verified to adhere to RoHS regulations.

·          Partially RoHS Compliant Stock: Some mixed stock may be non-compliant. If RoHS compliancy is necessary, please notify L-com.

·          Not Compliant At This Time: Products are in the process of being transitioned to RoHS compliant.

·          Exempt: Products do not fall into the RoHS mandate.

How Does L-com Check for RoHS Compliance?

In 2004, L-com procured special x-ray equipment to start monitoring the chemical composition of piece parts coming in from electronic suppliers.  This equipment gives L-com quality assurance personnel the ability to verify that parts are within the guidelines for RoHS initiatives.
