L-com’s USB 2.0 Field-Installable Connectors L-com’s new USB field installable IP67 connectors allow you to make your own cable assemblies (using bulk USB cable) that are weatherproof and waterproof. They mate with all of the other waterproof USB cables and connectors that L-com carries, and they also work with the waterproof caps.
What does IP67 mean? IP stands for ingress protection. It is a rating of how much resistance to ingress a cable, connector, or adapter has. The first number after the IP is for the part’s protection against solid objects like dust and sand. The second number after the IP is for the part’s protection against liquids. An IP67 cable or connector is totally resistant to dust and protected against temporary immersion in water between 15cm and 1m deep for up to 30 minutes. Click here for a full chart of IP ratings.
How do L-com’s IP67-rated USB products work? Remember that the IP67 rating on products is only effective if the product is used correctly. L-com’s IP67- rated USB products work by using a gasket and a nut to tighten the mating connectors together. The new field installable connectors work the same way, except they have a sealing nut that also tightens the connector to the bulk cable. Once the connector is installed correctly, you have a IP67 rated cable custom made to your needs. All of these connectors can be panel-mounted by cutting a hole in the panel (download the engineering drawing for recommended panel opening dimensions), inserting the connector, and tightening the nut and gasket.
