Why use Field Termination D-Sub Connectors?
Few connectors are more versatile than the D-Subminiature connector. Not only does it have multiple pins to carry serial or parallel data (or even video, as in VGA cables), but it also uses thumbscrews to lock down the connection. In addition, it is relatively small and easy to manage. Just about the only down-side is the challenge posed by terminating a D-Sub connector. Traditionally, the only way to do it was either with solder and a soldering iron, or crimping the pins on the wires and poking them through the holes of the connector. Both methods are difficult to do in the field, where creating a new D-Sub connection may be vital.
Enter the L-com Field Termination Connectors. These easy-to-assemble connectors feature all the advantages of D-Sub connectors, but they have a screw termination block on the back. Simply strip the wires, stick them in the appropriate hole, and screw down to finish termination.
Don’t have a screwdriver handy? L-com’s new screwless versions of the female D-Sub connectors are perfect to have on hand. Instead of screws, they use spring-lock levers to open and close the termination of the different pins. In addition to their easy termination, they are panel-mountable by simply removing the hex screws, inserting the connector through a cutout, and re-installing the hex screws.
L-com has these connectors in volume, available for same-day shipping, but why not stock up on a couple just in case of emergencies? They are handy to have and a lifesaver in situations where a quick termination must be done and a soldering iron cannot be used.
