L-com carries more than 20 different styles and kits involving Power-over-Ethernet passive products. (Click here for a brief tutorial on Power over Ethernet.) Why does L-com offer so many varieties for something that is relatively simple? Because there are several options to consider when purchasing a PoE device, even a passive one.
Complete PoE kits In order to work, PoE actually requires two things: an injector/tap and a power source. At L-com, we sell the power sources separately, but you can also buy an injector/ tap and power source as a kit. When doing so, you must know how many watts of power you need. L-com sells 48VDC @ 48W and 48VDC @ 70W power source kits but if you need a different wattage, you must buy a separate power supply. Lightning/Surge protection Properly grounded PoE injectors and taps provide the minimal safety requirements for dealing with live power, but lightning and power surges are still a danger to sensitive electrical equipment. That's why L-com provides PoE injectors/taps with built-in lightning and surge protection. Indoor vs. Outdoor L-com's indoor PoE injectors/taps have rugged cast aluminum housings with easy-access grounding lugs and terminals for easy grounding. But if you're going to be installing the device where rain or splash moisture and dirt may affect it, you will need an outdoor-style injector/tap. Additional ports are available Sometimes you're not just powering a single device at the end of a PoE run but several devices. For those applications, L-com offers a quad port passive PoE injector/tap with four individual ports.
Compliant vs. Non-Compliant
Our passive injectors work with both 802.3af PoE-compliant products as well as most non-compliant 10/100BaseT PoE network appliances that use pins 4/5 and 7/8 for power. What's more, our passive injectors work with DC or AC power supplies from 5 – 56 volts.
