Industrial Connectivity Products
For nearly nine out of ten cabling jobs, simple, unshielded cables, connectors, adapters, and networking devices are perfectly adequate. But for the remainder, a variety of environmental factors such as dust, water, EMI, heat, or extreme cold call for special equipment. We call that equipment "industrial grade".
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) defined several levels of Ingress Protection (IP) for parts. The most common IP code we are asked for is IP67, which is totally protected against dust and protected against the effects of temporary immersion under water between 15cm and 1m.

Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) problems?- Get shielded cables, connectors, and adapters.
In some situations, shielded cables should be avoided because EMI can build up on the shield just like an antenna. If you do need shielded cable, make sure the connectors of that cable and the adapters that you plug into are also shielded and grounded so the EMI drains away.

IEEE-488
Extreme heat or cold installations? - Use heated or cooled enclosures and add ventilation to racks.
Extreme temperatures are the bane of many industrial installations. Fortunately, heated and cooled NEMA enclosures are available for installations outdoors. These enclosures are secure, water resistant (IP65), and easily installed in a number of locations.

Still unsure about switches in your environment?Use switches that were built to take the pain and never quit.
Finally, industrial grade switches, built specially to take the brunt of heat, cold, and other trauma, provide the best insurance against extreme environments.
