How is a Cable Born? - Vol. 9 No. 3

Volume 9, Number 3 How is a cable born? First, there is the idea of the cable. This can come from a lot of different places: from standards organizations, to ideas from our Product Development group, to you, our customer, calling with a special need for a custom product. Wherever the idea comes from, it ends up in our Product Development department where they evaluate the opportunity and, if approved, plan out how the cable will be made. This is an arduous task that requires a lot of technical and manufacturing know-how. L-com is lucky to have some of the best Product Managers in the business, with a full staff of Sales Engineers, Product Engineers, and Product Administrators to work on every idea.  The next stop is the Product Engineers, who work to put the plans from the Product Managers into a single document usable by our manufacturers.  This product usually comes in the form of an Engineering Drawing. The drawing maps out dimensions, components, and even colors for the new part. When this is done, the drawings go out for approval by whoever started the process.  Once the drawing is approved, it goes to our factory to start production. L-com has several factories at its disposal, including our China Manufacturing Plant, our North Andover, MA Manufacturing Plant, and our HyperLink Manufacturing Plant in Florida. Our Product Managers work closely with our Purchasing Department to figure out which is the best place to make the product. Finally, the product is built according to the requirements of the approved engineering drawing. But, building the cable isn't the end of the process - all products are inspected by our ISO:9001 registered Quality Control department to make sure they are built to the drawing's specifications. Once past inspection, the order is boxed up and shipped out. One of the good things about this process is we issue a new part number for every new custom part, so if you need more of it you can easily place another PO for the same part number and not have to re-approve the drawing.
