Volume 8, Number 1 Origins of BNC, SMA and Other Connectors BNC, TNC, SMA, D-Sub are all commonly used terms to describe connector types but did you ever wonder about the origins of these terms? BNC Connector Well, each one has a story and a beginning. In some cases, such as BNC and TNC, the origins involve the person who first developed the interface. Paul Neill of then Bell Labs and Carl Concelman of Amphenol were two engineers involved in the design of many of the early microwave connection interfaces and as such BNC derived from Bayonet Neill Concelman and TNC from Threaded Neill Concelman. In the case of SMA it was size that determined the origin SubMiniAture. As time went on other smaller size interfaces were developed, making the subminiature term outdated. SMA Connector D-Subminiature Connector Time making terminology obsolete also applies to D-Sub which refers to a D shape subminiature connector appropriate when they were first introduced, but today they are among the largest common connectors used in computers.
