One of the great advantages of a cable assembly is that it can be routed through bends and turns to allow the connection between two devices or a device and a port. But sometimes you need to run a cable in an environment that could expose it to impacts. Impacts can come in a variety of forms, from having things dropped on the cable, to having something pin the cable up against a wall, to driving a heavy vehicle over it. Because these applications are not too common, a commercial solution has not been readily available...
L-com has recently released an exclusive line of "armored" USB and HDMI cable assemblies for rugged situations. Not only do they provide excellent protection for the cable within, but they are available off-the-shelf!
USB is most popular in iPads and cell phones, but it is actually used in a lot more places than that. New, high tech medical, military, aerospace, and industrial equipment are all using this standard for its many convenient features. But each of these environments can include impacts that would damage or destroy the sensitive construction of the standard cables. These metal armored cable assemblies come in seven different lengths off-the-shelf to provide USB connectivity with a crush resistance of 1500 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch).
Like USB, the HDMI standard has a reputation as being confined to your living room to connect your Blu-ray player to your HDTV. But in actuality, HDMI cables are becoming very common in digital signage applications, instruction screens in busy restaurants and retail establishments, and even some security equipment where the cable may be cut or damaged intentionally. L-com's solutions include a plastic armored HDMI cable with a crush resistance of 1000 PSI, or a metal armored HDMI cable with a crush resistance of 1500 PSI. These cables use the latest standard for HDMI® with Ethernet and are also available off-the-shelf.
