To ensure the best performance of a wireless LAN antenna system, signal loss needs to be kept at a minimum. A common cause of signal loss is often from the coaxial cable itself. The type and length of cable used are both determining factors that can lead to a weaker signal at the end of the cable where the antenna is connected. This leads to the introduction of Low-Loss coaxial cable. By providing better RF shielding than typical RG cable, signal loss through the cable is greatly reduced.

For example, a 2.4 GHz system using 50 feet of RG213 cable will have approximately 6 dB of loss. That is an efficiency of only 25%. L-com's CA-400 series which is the low-loss equivalent of RG213 only has 3.3 dB of loss, giving this cable an efficiency of 46.7%. That is almost half the signal loss of the RG213 cable.

The most common type of low-loss cable used for WLAN antenna systems is the 400-series type cable. L-com's CA-400 Low-Loss cable provides the perfect balance of being lightweight and small in diameter, while at the same time offering excellent low loss characteristics. Providing equal performance and mechanical characteristics from brands like CommScope/Andrew and Times Microwave, L-com's CA-400 low-loss coax is available in bulk reels of 500 or 1000 feet or can be purchased by-the-foot.
