Case Study: Crown Castle

Crown Castle is a leading independent owner and operator of wireless infrastructure that also builds and leases towers, rooftops and distributed antenna systems (DAS) for wireless communication in large markets. They pride themselves on being able to provide comprehensive site deployment with state-of-the-art processes and tools.

 

As part of a wireless networking project for Disney theme parks, Crown Castle was facing the challenges of extreme heat and weather. They were in need of a UL-listed, weatherproof enclosure capable of supporting Power over Ethernet (PoE) with an integrated cooling fan.

 

Fortunately, L-com was able to deliver exactly what they needed by creating a customized, UL-listed, weatherproof equipment enclosure. The rugged, fiberglass enclosure featured multiple PoE interfaces, the ability to mount two wireless CPE devices and it was able to be locked for added security.

 

In the end, L-com was able to fulfill all of our client’s needs and this custom product helped Crown Castle offer seamless Wi-Fi access for customers and employees of Disney Parks.

Case Study: Performance Motion Devices

Performance Motion Devices (PMD) is a global leader in the arena of motion control ICs, drives, cards and software. They specialize in supplying OEM customers with high-performance, cost-effective motion systems for medical devices, robotics, test instrumentation and industrial automation industries, to mention a few.

 

The company was in need of a new supplier for a 100-position SCSI cable used with one of their motion controller interface cards after their current supplier increased pricing. This type of cable is not only uncommon, it’s also difficult to build, but PMD needed the cables quickly and needed them to meet the company’s cost and technical requirements. Luckily, L-com was just the manufacturing partner for the job.

 

L-com’s engineering team got to work and was able to quickly and successfully design a custom 100-Position SCSI interface cable with a rugged, molded back-shell. They were even able to add a few design tweaks to make the cables’ appearance more appealing. Plus, the team at L-com was able to meet all of PMD’s design requirements in the time frame given and on budget. Overall, this project was a successful study in how L-com’s engineering and Product Management teams were capable of stepping up to meet the challenge to fulfill their customers’ needs.

Case Study: Union Electrica

Union Electrica, a systems design and installation services company based in Uruguay and servicing all of Latin America, won a large contract with the city of Medellin, Columbia. They were tasked with the challenge of deploying a WiMAX network that connected more than 1,200 subscriber points, but they needed help. Fortunately, L-com had the perfect solution.

 

To successfully complete the WiMAX network rollout in Medellin, Union Electronica needed a system that would support the 3.5 GHz frequency with a focused directional wireless connection that could perform in all weather conditions. They also required low-loss cables and lightning and surge protectors to complete the installation.

 

L-com was able to fulfill all of Union Electrica’s network requirements with a 3.5 GHz antenna that was compact, minimized interference, supported vertical or horizontal polarization and featured a 25° beamwidth.

 

The L-com team also provided low-loss coaxial cable assemblies, surge protectors and COTS antennas and accessories, all of which were in-stock and available for immediate shipment to fulfill the accelerated installation schedule.

 

In the end, with the help of L-com, Union Electrica was able to successfully deliver a high-speed WiMAX network to the city of Medellin while meeting all budget and installation deadline requirements.

Case Study: Sony Biotechnology

Sony Biotechnology is an award winning, state-of-the-art medical manufacturing company that has delivered innovative, high-quality product solutions to the global market for 23 years. Their main focus is the flow cytometry market, designing and building equipment that sorts human and animal cells.

 

One of Sony Biotechnology’s new products needed a high-quality, shielded Ethernet cable that could meet Sony’s design requirements. The cable needed to have stranded conductors, color coded conductors, a tinned copper braided shield that could be soldered to and a low-smoke zero-halogen jacket to meet environmental and safety standards. This design-specific cable also had to meet project deadline and cost constraints.

 

Sony purchased cable from another manufacturer, but they ran into several issues that made the cable unusable. For example, during testing, the cable would not hold the solder to attach to the grounding wire. Plus, the individual conductors were not color coded, which made termination very challenging and time consuming. After asking for the supplier’s cable specs, it was also discovered the cable’s braided shield had been made with aluminum instead of tinned copper.

 

Since this manufacturer’s cable failed Sony’s testing and requirements, Sony consulted with L-com’s product management team to find a solution. Our product team was able to provide them with an off-the-shelf solution that met all of Sony’s needs, the TRD855DSZ-7 Ethernet cable. This double-shielded, 26 AWG cable with a LSZH jacket not only met all of Sony’s requirements, but it was available immediately and met Sony’s price target.

Case Study: Lineage Logistics

As the second largest cold storage thrid-party provider in the US, Lineage Logistics provides cold storage solutions for leading grocery, food and retail  companies.

 

During a wireless network roll-out in their warehouses, Lineage Logistics needed to add multiple access points inside refrigeration units with temperatures as low as -40 degrees. The company’s engineers had designed a wireless access point that fulfilled the needs of the project, but wasn’t able to function unprotected in the cold temperatures.

 

Lineage Logistics began searching for an enclosure that would protect their access point, offer Power over Ethernet (PoE) over a single cable and meet cost requirements.

 

After rejecting a competitor’s offering, as it didn’t fully meet the requirements, Lineage Logistics came to L-com for help. Our team was able to develop a comprehensive solution that met all their needs. We created a custom NEMA enclosure that could house the access point and provide plently of room if adjustments were needed. We were also able to save Lineage Logistics time and money on installation by mounting the access points in the enclosures and providing all required cabling and antennas.

  

L-com was able to not only meet, but surpass this client’s expectations with the perfect solution to their problem.
